Originally from Belfast, I studied Classics at Durham University and after training as a Barrister, a chance conversation led me unexpectedly to tutoring. Over the past fifteen years, I have tutored here in London, across the British Isles, throughout Europe and Asia, as well as online to over two hundred students from a wide variety of backgrounds. I specialise in tuition for 9 to 13 year-olds preparing for pretest, Common Entrance and scholarship entrance exams. I teach Latin and Classical Greek through to GCSE and A level, as well as Oxbridge Preparation. I also tutor mature students wishing to learn one-to-one, or pupils who can’t fit in the GCSE or A-level around their school timetable or if it is not available on the curriculum.
I am available to tutor in London and across the UK, internationally, in person and/or online. Since 2012 I have undertaken international residential placements in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Singapore, Venice, Vienna, Switzerland, France and the Channel Islands.
In terms of my own tutoring technique, I draw on my own educational experiences when I was 10 to 12 years old, a pivotal time for me. As a teenager too, I was privately tutored in Classical Greek and I understood just how dynamic tuition can be in shaping someone’s future. Now through motivation, building rapport and confidence, pedagogy, developing critical thinking, inquiry and debate, I am determined to empower others to be the very best that they can be.
With an enhanced DBS check, I am an Individual Member of the Tutors’ Association, the professional body for tutoring in the UK, and signed up to its Code of Conduct. I had the privilege to serve as the Association’s President from March 2016 to March 2019 and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in June 2018. I am a judge annually for the Association’s National Tutoring Awards. Most recently, I have published a book on tutoring: How to Tutor and Influence People, which you can find and buy on Amazon.
