School Choices

The following is a summary of the advice given by Tony Little, former Headmaster of Eton College in his book An Intelligent Person’s Guide to Education:

  1. Make sure the school has a culture of good relationships. Note eye-contact and the greetings from those you meet on the school visit. Do you feel you/your child matters?

  2. A commitment to all-round education.

  3. Does the head inspire confidence?

  4. Do the teachers inspire you?

  5. Does the school focus on the professional development of its teachers?

  6. Are the facilities facilitating?

  7. Does the school’s statistics make sense?

  8. Can pupils have time to explore their talents and have time-out?

  9. Can a young person learn to find and be himself/herself?

  10. Be wary of a school showing off its institutional awards and badges.
